- Slovenian language for your wikis is now available. Thanks to the unknown contributer. In order to activate the slovanian translation open your wiki's configuration and chose "Slovenian" from the language drop down. If you want to help us make wikihost.org better, you are welcome to contribute the translation for your native language.
- As desired by some of our users, we made the new captcha service optional, because it indeed is not really necessary for password protected wikis at all. You can now chose to disable the captcha by unchecking the corresponding checkbox in your wiki's configuration.
By default, the captcha service is enabled for every wiki.
- The captcha is now also used for the page discussions (which where the main target for automated spam). The deactivation works the same way as it does for the normal page edit captcha.
- We added a captcha service to the page editor to avoid your wikis getting spammed by bots. It took us a while to do this step, as we think it is quite uncomfortable to handle. But as the amount of spam placed in your wikis constantly increases we felt it now was time.
The special with that service, provided by Carnegie Mellon University, is that it helps them to scan old books (you know, those made of paper).
- The wiki build-in search function did not work since some weeks (no idea, when exactly it stopped its service). We fixed it (thanks to Karlos for the bug report) and it should now work as expected again.
- New version of the GeboGebo engine now has markups for superscripted text as well as for subscripted text. To superscript a text simply put it between two pairs of ``, to subscript use double commas instead ,,. Or simply use the two editor buttons.
- The partial editing that we re-activated still contained a bug, when doing text conversions, so German Umlauts and other special Characters were messed. This is fixed now. Thomas@wikihost
- The page editor now is a bit more comfortable: Most markups can be directly put on selected text when clicking the corresponding buttons. Thomas@wikihost
- A gimmick for all you techies out there:
http://wikihost.org/hotspots-en shows (based on the magic word AJAX) the currently visited/read wikis ordered by the amount of users. It's an experimental feature which might or might not make it into the public web site structure of wikihost.org
- The partial editing function is back now, after we turned it off a couple of days ago, due to a bad bug, that messed page contents, when too long lines were on the page (we have to deal with a maximum of 255 Chars per line). If a user has the permission to edit a page, he also can edit parts of it. A part is always a range of text separated by headlines. The edit function for a pages part can be accessed by clicking the small symbol next to the headlines. Please report to us, if you experience any problems with the partial editing. Thanks Thomas@wikihost
- We added two new plugins to everyone's wiki. That's tocsub and tocall, where tocsub is meant to display a table of contents, for the headline following the plugin itself. So you can place the plugin by using ''plugin:tocsub'' somewhere on a page and get a TOC for only all the following headlines.
The tocall plugin instead displays a table of contents for either all pages when calling it like ''plugin:tocall'' or for all pages of a given namespace when using it like this ''plugin:tocall(MYNAMESPACE:)'' (e.g. ''plugin:tocall(talk:)'' displays all headlines used in discussions). We want to thank
Robert Linn for contributing those two new plugins.
- We extended the GeboGebo version used here on wikihost.org by a new discussion function. So now it is possible, to have some communication about the content of each page without putting it directly into the page.
See the "Discussion" button on the top navigation bar of your wiki. We hope you like it.
- We put on our new web site design and layout which replaces the old, slightly dusted one. We hope you like it.
- Also new is the possibility to change your user settings, so you now can define your own password (and don't need to remember the goofy one) and change your EMail address for recovery.
- The web site now is held in English only. German has been dropped due to the immense work to keep it synchronized.
- Intext ads are displayed in every wiki on the very right side of each content page.
- Tagging: We added a tag cloud to wikihost.org which can be used to easily find relevant wiki content. We encourage all of you, to use the "Tag it!" button which is shown on each wiki pages top right corner to tag wikis and pages with keywords.
- The center wiki (this one you are currently reading) now also gets listet in the
RecentChanges
You hopefully will like the changes we'd done and will do next time. Your wikihost.org team
- Wikihost.org has been moved to a new server location. Unfortunately this was a hard job due to some technical difficulties we had to resolve.
We apologize for the long down time of our service. Thank you for your patience.
- Due to a silly, tiny mistake it was impossible to create new wikis since yesterdays update. The bug is fixed.
- wikihost.org has been translated almost completely into German. It is now possible to switch between both languages, English and German by clicking the corresponding flag symbol. English stays the default language.
- The wiki configuration page now shows the hard disk space left for the wiki. As promised, each wiki currently gets 100 MB hard disk space for the system, content, files and images.
- The layout on wikihost.org slightly changed - nothing serious at all
- We introduced the Top20-Wikis ranking. It is displayed on the homepage instead of the whole (and already very long) list of public wikis here on wikihost.org.
The list of public wikis has moved to an extra page. The charts are refreshed once an hour. The previous week position is always taken in the night from sunday to monday.
- The RecentChanges list now appears more structured because all wiki names and page names are shortend to a maximum of 20 characters. The full names can be read by hovering the mouse cursor over the link. The IP addresses of known editors are not displayed anymore.
- The list of public accessible wikis is now sorted in alphabetical order of the descriptive wiki names. Before it was sorted by the system names which made it appear quite chaotic.
- It is now possible to protect a (private) wiki against any kind of access by defining a authentication username and password. Only users that then know the username and password will be able to gain at least read access to the protected wiki. The username and password are to be setup on the configuration page of the wiki which is to be protected. If one of both fields is set blank again, the authentication (but not the privacy flag) will be removed.
In combination with HTTPS this might be an option of interest for private groups or companies to use wikihost.org.
